<p>Jim Stengel, the heralded Global Marketing Officer for Proctor and Gamble, aptly pointed out that traditional “telling and selling is dead”, and he is right. Others have similarly pointed out that consumers today want a dialogue, they want to be involved, and they need to be empowered. The impressive growth of social marketing has certainly demonstrated the power of dialogue and empowerment of the participants. Every Tweet, Facebook post, or LinkedIn interaction reinforces that paradigm. So what does it mean for <a title="About energy marketers" href="/about-energy-edge/">energy marketers</a>? How do we establish a dialogue and involve our customers or prospects so we build meaningful long-term relationships?</p>
<p>So let’s challenge some of the conventional wisdom of <a title="Heating oil business marketing" href="/what-is-energy-edge-2/">energy marketing</a> and see if we need to re-think how we are communicating with our customers. Here’s a sampling to think about.</p>
<p> <strong>Pricing</strong>: Can your customers easily find out what price they will be charged for a delivery made today or tomorrow? Either full-service or will-call? Will all customers receiving the same level of service get the same price?<br />
 <strong>Deliveries</strong>: Do your customers know when they will get their next delivery? Do you advise them? Do they receive any notification of their delivery (other than the unfriendly ticket that was left in the door or in the mailbox)? Do they receive a personal “thank you” from you for their business?<br />
 <strong>Products</strong>: Do your customers know about the blended fuel you just delivered to them and why that is good for them? Do they know about the new high-efficiency propane furnace that qualifies for federal tax rebates? Or that you can arrange financing so they can budget it at only $129/month?<br />
 <strong>Programs</strong>: Do your customers have the option to pick and choose the combination of products and services that makes the most sense for them? Or is it “one size fits all”?<br />
 <strong>Communications</strong>: How often do you communicate with your customers? Do they receive more than an annual “program” letter? More than that? Do you offer them any on-line surveys so they can let you know how you are doing?</p>

<p><strong>Energy customers are different today!</strong> I think I just heard several of you say, &#8220;duh&#8221;! But understand what the implications are for your business and how you need to adapt. We could go on for hours on this topic, but let&#8217;s keep it simple and say that your customers are smarter, more demanding and less forgiving than grandad&#8217;s. Let me explain. <em>Smarter</em>&#8230; with just a few keystokes on a keyboard and a few words typed into a search engine your customers know what the NYMEX was for fuel yesterday, who your chief competitors are, and how your customers rate your service. The internet is powerful and you need to know how to manage your presence and your reputation on the internet. <em>More demanding</em>&#8230;they want it when they want it, how they want it and at the price they think is fair. It&#8217;s no longer good enough to have office hours 9-4 Mon-Fri. That&#8217;s so 20th century! Today&#8217;s customer expect to be able to access your services 24/7/365. And don&#8217;t try to tell them what you want them to buy, because they only want to buy the products and services that make sense for them, so you better be flexible with your product offerings. <em>Less forgiving</em>&#8230;You bet they are. Not only will they stop buying from you, but they&#8217;re likely to tell the world about their bad experience, too. By the same token, if you give customers the products they are looking for, price them fairly and back it up with quality customer service, customers will also sing your praises. </p>
<p><strong>Energy demand is shifting quickly</strong>. Heating oil gallons continue to decline, propane gallons are up, I can buy my electricity from a dozen different companies, natural gas is at the lowest price in 7 years, Obama wants more solar, and even wind is gaining traction in certain areas. Wow! So what does this mean for your business? Are you a fuel company, or are you an energy company? As your customers turn toward other forms of energy, should you be involved? I talked to a friend of mine this week who is now involved with a new company that is training HVAC techniciains to install solar PV systems. Is that a good way to add more revenue to your company and satisfy the demand of your customers? Take a page out of grandad&#8217;s book. After all, as coal stokers declined, grandad added other energy to the company. Didn&#8217;t he?</p>
<p><strong>Today&#8217;s energy companies must be smarter, too</strong>. You know all that data that you have in your computer system? Today&#8217;s leading companies, and the leading energy companies too, are turning that data into useful information that can be used to operate their businesses better, reduce costs further, increas efficency, provide better customer service, and increase their profits. It&#8217;s no longer good enough to operate your business the same ol&#8217; way you have for the last 10 years. Today, Performance Management initiatives are underway, using sophisticates business intelligence software to allow you to know how and where you can improve your business and stay ahead of your competitors. <p><strong>E-Commerce has changed the retail world</strong>. &#8230;and it&#8217;s only just begun. Last Saturday a major snowstorm rolled through the mid-Atlantic region and customers could not get to the malls to finish thei Christmas shopping on what historically is the largest Saturday in the retail business. Sales were down in stores along the heavily populated I-95 corridor. So what did shoppers do? They turned to the internet and on-line sales soard 24% higher than the same day last year. If you are in the downstream energy business, you too are in the retail business. Can your customers do business with you on the internet? The energy industyr has been slow to adopt e-commerce, but that is starting to change. What if you were the Amazon of energy in your territory? Imagine.</p>
